is as valuable to the child as it is the caterpillar."

"Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar PHOTOGRAPHING TINY LIFE by Betsy Seeton Tiny life exists all around us and flourishes in a world all its own. Rarely is it seen or experienced by humans except when it evokes fear, annoyance and/or a big yuck factor. But I've witnessed marvelous things with these small creatures and find them in some ways quite human-like. I've witnessed surprise, joy, and triumphs. I've seen life and death struggles, fear and stress, and territorial fights. Insects, like most life forms, have a strong desire to survive. They want the basic necessities just like we do: food, water and shelter. Some are quite communal, while others prefer a solitary life. I've also seen them be curious, playful, trusting, cautious, and literally having fun. Sometimes they seem to even have distinct personalities. I began consciously introducing insects to my granddaughter when she three as we went on hikes. I hope to stir her curiosity, as well as develop her respect for all living creatures. All too often people are fearful and children copy what they see. I want her to look with wonder -- not fear. We saved two house spiders on one of her visits by capturing them in a glass and letting them go outside. Giving children the gift of awe and appreciation for the world around them, and nurturing their love for all life will serve them daily.
