It was just a normal Saturday morning, the last day I would expect something amazing to happen. And yet it did. More amazing than anything I could dream of. That’s just how life works. Small miracles happen when you least expect it. Small miracles that touch your heart and are impossible to forget.
Living in Colorado, I’ve seen hundreds of deer and elk. There are also thousands of different bird species here. And many, many rodents. I see them every day. Whether it is just a crow hopping along a fence, or a pair of bull elk fighting with their antlers. They're all beautiful in their own way.
But the most touching thing I’ve ever seen was the rare beauty of a newborn fawn. I call it the fawn episode because the fascination lasted about as long as an episode of a TV show. It was the most enchanting half-hour of my whole life. It happened over a year ago, but I still remember it vividly.
It all started as we were going home from the grocery store. One of the other girls in the neighborhood ran out in front of the car, causing my mother to slam on the breaks. She rolled down the window and asked what this was all about. “There are two fawns out there who were just born yesterday!” she squealed. My mother stopped the car right there and we ran to see the newborn wonders. We came to a pause at the big tree. And there! Two tiny scrawny fawns were curled up side by side. One was sleeping like a rock, whereas the other was wide awake, fearfully watching us. Ready to defend her brother. Most of the neighborhood children were there. Staring in wonder, exclaiming in hushed voices, and snapping pictures on on our cameras, and in our hearts. We still see the young deer now, but they are no longer the tiny things they used to be. Now they aren’t even with their mother. They roam free unaware of our fascination for them.
