PASSIONATE ABOUT ANIMALS

I really love animals,  especially elephants. I have loved them since I was less than a year old. I enjoy reading about animals, going to places where I can see them, drawing and painting pictures of them, and watching documentaries about them. I visited a sloth sanctuary when we traveled to Costa Rica two years ago.

When we were in Costa Rica, we also saw basilisk lizards, Jesus Christ lizards, jaguarundis, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, capybaras, coatis, and Costa Rican boars. We got up really early one morning and went for a long hike in the mountains to see toucans. Here is a picture of me with a lizard (I’m not sure what kind) that was just hanging out at the hotel pool.

Last year I was in the Roots and Shoots Club at my school here in Vietnam. We did lots of activities and raised money for Endangered Asian Species Trust (EAST). I did a slide show on elephants and helped to organize a movie night. My dad and I visited the rescue and rehabilitation center for Wildlife At Risk (W.A.R.) that is a few hours’ drive away from Ho Chi Minh City. That’s me holding hands with a gibbon. Unfortunately, most of the animals there are in cages. But W.A.R. and E.A.S.T. are some of the few organizations in Vietnam trying to protect animals. They have a lot of different animal sanctuaries. They have a moon bear sanctuary at Cat Tien National Park. I went there with my class in March. I kept a journal about my visit to Cat Tien. It has drawings of some of the animals.

I am so happy because this Christmas I am going to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to see elephants. I will visit three different sanctuaries and I also get to go to Patara Elephant Farm, which is a place where you can hang out with rescued elephants all day long. You feed them and play in the water with them. Although I really miss Seattle and all my friends there, the best part
of moving to Vietnam is that I can go to places where I can see animals. I even get to see cool things like blue headed lizards and frogs in our yard. Last week we had three different types of frogs and a toad in our house.

When I grow up I am going to be an artist and an animal conservationist. My dream is to go to Kenya and see wild African elephants. My mom and I are saving up to go there. Right now I’m also writing a graphic novel called Zoa. It’s about a young elephant named Eton who has to go on a quest to save the land of Zoa (which is Latin for animals) from being covered in darkness by his grandfather, who is being used by humans. I also like doing stop motion videos. I have a YouTube channel called LegoElephantStudios.

I enjoyed reading your blog & seeing your drawings & paintings. As wonderful as Seattle is there is nothing quite like getting to actually live in other countries & share your experiences this way. I live on the Olympic Peninsula. I will be sure & show them to my grandchildren. One of them, Ulee, lives in West Seattle & is 12

You are extremely talented as a writer and an artist. I know that eventually you will have a chance to see the elephants in Kenya. Study hard, get good grades and keep drawing and I'm sure all of your dreams will come true.

Hello Kabir ! You are a very interesting boy! I enjoyed reading what you wrote as well as the pictures you drew. I felt myself imagining what it must be like to be you with all the adventures you shared through your writing. I have always wanted to travel to Vietnam and hope to one day. My two sons would have loved going out into their yard and finding a Bearded Dragon- and all the other things you are experiencing where you are. Please tell us more when you find time! Thank you for sharing these interesting and exciting things you are experiencing with us! I know you will enjoy Thailand at Christmas time as well! And when you get to Kenya one day and look up into that HUGE night sky that I have heard so MUCH about, you will know that dreams really DO come true! I hope we heard a LOT more from you in the future and THANK YOU for sharing some of your life with us. We can travel and dream through others stories and pictures- and be inspired! You have inspired me tonight! Cheers!

Kabir, you are a gem of a soul. I was very touched by your love of animals and passion for conservation. You are very blessed to have had the life experiences you have had at such a young age, no wonder you express yourself so articulately. I hope to hear more of your adventures and to buy your book when it is complete. Keep up the good work and do not loose sight of your goals, even as the evolve and change. Many blessings to you and your family!

Kabir,

I would say that you are already an artist and an animal conservationist, and a delightful one at that. You are wise beyond your years and growing up will only make you more powerful in achieving the goals you have already begun to carve out -- for yourself and the animals of the world. You are a gift to this planet.

Thank you for sharing yourself, your art and your adventures.

Dear Kabir,
You are such an inspiration, it warms my heart to know that people of all ages can care and make a difference for animals. You are SO important to this world and the animals. Especially in Vietnam, where many people believe it is OK to toture animals - you are our hero and all of the animals and activitists need you people like you to spread the word that animals have feelings and need to be treated better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! If you would like to read about my fight for animals please visit my website www.bvdgies.com/animalliberation and feel free to get in touch if you would like to talk about animal rights.

Keep up the good work!!

Amanda

Hi Kabir!
You really suit your name - GREAT :-)
You are a great writer and inspirator. I am also a big fan of elephants. It's a bit funny, we have the opposite dreams and experiences. I've been to Kenya several times and seen the huge African elephants. And I have also spent a lot of time together with the orphaned ones at the Sheldrick Orphanage. My dream is one day to be able to go to Thailand and visit some really good elephant places I've been supporting. Like Soraida Salwala's elephant hospital, The Boon Lott Elephant Sanctuary and Elephant Nature Park. I really look forward to your blog post telling all about your experiences in Thailand. May you have a wonderful Christmas.

Kabir, as our grandmother I realize that I might be a little on your side already, but I really think that I can see so much talent and dedication in you at such an early age. Recently I was talking to someone who talked about the things one might aspire to do in his lifetime; this person said that the one thing he thought everyone should do would be to go to the middle of Africa, camp out in the vast area where there are no cities or towns, have the very dark night around you where there is no artificial light with the vast African sky over you and hear the sound of an elephant in the not so far distance. He said it was like nothing else one could imagine. I hope that one of these days you will be able to go there, to experience the sight of an elephant in his own backyard and in the hugeness of that area. Keep drawing, writing and communicating with us. Love

Kabir,

Wonderful blog. I'm no doubt late to the game on this, but as I know you love elephants I wonder if you've ever looked at S Dali's Swans Reflecting Elephants, c.1937. Colin gave me a Dali book years ago so I should have thought of it earlier - and I'm sure colin has already made you aware of it. The book he gave me was in German, one of the many languages I don't read or speak. But this year I had a Dali calendar and December's picture was Swans Reflecting Elephants so I thought of you and how you might have fun adding swans to your artwork. Check it out and keep up the good work. Peace out!

My name is Kabir Kukathas, and I am 12 years old. I live in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. I am originally from Seattle, but in 2013, I moved here.  I love to draw, sketch, make cartoons and comics, make stop motion, and I especially like to draw elephants. I love all animals, but elephants are my true passion. I am writing a book about a elephant, and am giving the proceeds to elephants too. Around my house live lots of small animals, as well as my cat, and I like to observe them when they appear.
